The Best Exercises for Seniors Over 60: Full-Body Routine

You don't need 25 exercises. You need seven you actually do. This is the full-body routine we build every Stronger With Age client on — the same movements, scaled to where you are today.

The rules of a senior-smart workout

  • Train movements, not muscles: squat, hinge, push, pull, carry, rotate, walk
  • Every session hits the whole body — no leg day / arm day splits
  • Load enough that the last two reps feel like work
  • Prioritize joints that lose range first: hips, thoracic spine, shoulders

The 7-exercise full-body routine

  1. Goblet squat (or sit-to-stand) — 2×10. Legs, glutes, core.
  2. Dumbbell Romanian deadlift — 2×10. Hamstrings, glutes, back.
  3. Elevated push-up (bench or bar) — 2×8–12. Chest, shoulders, core.
  4. Single-arm dumbbell row — 2×10 per side. Upper back, posture, grip.
  5. Split stance / rear-foot-elevated split squat — 2×8 per side. Single-leg strength and balance.
  6. Farmer carry — 2 × 30 seconds. Grip, core, upright posture.
  7. Dead bug or bird dog — 2×8 per side. Anti-rotation core stability.

Weekly plan

  1. Monday: Full-body routine above
  2. Tuesday: 30–45 minute walk on Oro Valley loop or treadmill

  4. Thursday: Rest or gentle walk
  5. Friday: Full-body routine (same movements, small progression in load or reps)
  6. Saturday/Sunday: Something you love — hike, pickleball, golf, grandkids

Modifications by level

  • Beginner: Bodyweight for every lift, chair-supported squats, push-ups on a countertop, 5-lb farmer carry.

  • Advanced (yes, 70+ can be here): Trap-bar deadlifts, weighted split squats, weighted carries.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best exercise routine for seniors over 60?

A full-body routine built on seven movements — squat, hinge, push, pull, split squat, carry, and core — done two to three times per week covers every fitness marker that matters after 60.

How many days a week should a 60+ adult work out?

Two strength days, one balance and mobility day, and two to three days of walking or activity you enjoy. That's five active days with plenty of recovery built in.

Can seniors over 70 lift weights?

Absolutely. With a proper movement screen and gradual progression, adults in their 70s and 80s handle trap-bar deadlifts, split squats, and loaded carries — often at loads that surprise them.

Do I need a personal trainer to start?

You can start alone using this routine, but a senior-specialty coach shortens the learning curve, protects old injuries, and keeps you consistent. Amber's $85 Kickstart Session is the fastest way to test the fit.
